The She Wolf and The 4 Kids
One day I was crossing the Roman Square in Bucharest, where the statue of Romulus and Remus stands. I asked myself what would happen if, for a short period of time, our Romulus and Remus were removed and place close to their wolf foster-mother in Rome.
The Romanian wolf mother would be left alone here and Romulus and Remus would have an adoptive mother in Rome. So, on the one hand, we have an abandoned mother with her eyes fool of sadness and on the other we have an anxious and apparently exhausted foster-mother, far away…the Italian foster-wolf-mother, who’s some way sweeter milk is insufficient for her 4 sons and the Romanian one, which seems to be confused, as though waken from a century-long sleep. It’s a metaphor for the condition of the Romanians and Gypsies working in Italy, and their permanent oscillation between rejection, indifference and assimilation. The great former Empire, conquered now by immigrants.
During childhood I would raise the carbon paper enthusiastically to see the result. Even if I wasn’t a good drawer the carbon paper made me believe that Mickey Mouse or Pluto were my creations. The result was rarely perfect and the drawings lacked both color and volume.
The carbon paper operates likewise with luxurious products; filters the details and the results lack shining and color. There’s nothing from the original aggressiveness.
Exclusivity fades away as does the visual temptation.
