Portofolio in Progress is a periodic publication whose first issue (Face) you are holding in your hands at this very moment. It represents the result of a personal wish that is to communicate with the public through my works. Less is more and more is less describes pretty well what this fanzine means. It is a simple but complex collection, 100% hand crafted (and it is not the Financial Crisis that determined me to do so), that I dedicate to the future.

This number brings together a series of portraits: of people I know or people I am about to meet, of passers-by or celebrities, of good or bad, black, white or pink faces, of persons that I’d like to see or I’d rather avoid. It is a collection of serious artistic self portraits or maybe just some rough caricatures, it may be a lasting document or simply a colouring book. It can be a collection of masks that invite you to discover what is behind them. It is for you to decide what you want to make out of it, and it is my way of letting you know who I am and what I produce. It sounds fair to me.

I chose to draw faces because they are the first thing you see in a familiar or strange person. I am a new face in this field, and at the moment this is what I do best. I am A.S Zarioiu and I welcome you to turn the page and enjoy a free, hand made piece of work.

By the way: look closely and you might be surprised to see yourself or maybe just one self of you amomg the portraits

Auto Indulgentia

Burned patern on wood, 2000 x 1250 mm

Inspired by the indulgence trade in the late medieval eve, I designed a vending machine that forgives your sins in the name of god (the catholic church has not yet bought my patent). The forgiveness comes out as a card with Johann Tetzel’s famous quote: “as soon as a coin in the coffer rings / the soul from the purgatory springs”, on one side and a space for the sins to be forgiven on the other side.

The whole process is “sub rosa”, in catholic meaning “confidential”.
